Module 4: Green Transition and Sustainable Development

About the module

This module focuses on the green transition and environmental reforms as one of the most transformative dimensions of North Macedonia’s EU accession process. The green transition lies at the heart of the European Union’s long-term growth model and the European Green Deal, and it is directly linked to citizens’ quality of life, public health, energy security and resilience to climate change.
The module will address the main environmental and climate-related challenges identified in the reform process, including waste management, air quality, energy efficiency, local environmental governance, outdated energy infrastructure, reliance on coal, low recycling rates, limited renewable energy production and insufficient community participation in environmental decision-making.

Special attention will be given to the gap between legislative alignment with the EU environmental acquis and the practical implementation of green reforms at national and local level. Participants will discuss how weak implementation, limited institutional coordination and low citizen engagement can slow down the environmental transition and reduce public trust in reform processes.Through expert input, interactive discussion and practical exercises, the module will help participants understand how civil society, journalists/media professionals and youth can monitor green reforms, communicate environmental challenges in an evidence-based way, advocate for sustainability and engage citizens in the green transition in line with EU standards and national commitments under the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans.

Who can apply

This module is intended for representatives of civil society organisations, journalists and media professionals, and youth interested in environmental protection, climate action, green transition, energy efficiency, local environmental governance, sustainability and EU integration.

What participants will gain

Participants will gain practical knowledge and tools to better understand, monitor and communicate green reforms and environmental challenges. They will also strengthen their capacity to promote sustainability, citizen participation, institutional accountability and evidence-based public dialogue on North Macedonia’s green transition and EU accession process.
